A recent article in the magazine Jewish Currents describes the efforts of the Florida Department of Education to develop standards for public school education about the Holocaust, for kindergarten through 12th grade. These standards are being developed by a state-appointed task force in conjunction with an expert panel composed of scholars and Jewish community leaders. Unfortunately, a Christian Zionist organization has intrusively injected its own agenda. Recently, Jewish Currents reported on the untruthful facts and distortions being promoted by this Christian Zionist group.

The group, led by Laurie Cardoza-Moore, calls itself “Proclaiming Justice to the Nations” (PJTN). Among other distortions, this group would like Florida’s children to believe that the Nazis slaughtered Jews because of their religion, rather than because of the Nazi ideology of Aryan racial supremacy.

Such distortions are a reflection of PJTN’s goal: namely, to elicit political support for Israel for the purpose of advancing their Christian Zionist theology regarding the end-times. Members of Florida’s curriculum advisory panel, which includes a healthy percentage of Jewish scholars and Jewish religious leaders, have repeatedly objected to the distortions introduced into drafts of Florida’s curriculum standards. Although some of their objections have been accepted, more work remains to be done in order to adhere to historical facts and to maintain the officially mandated focus on the Holocaust.
